Opening Thoughts

The purpose of this e-letter is two-fold. First I would like to share information on training/racing techniques that I have developed in my fifteen years of racing/coaching. If you think there is something valuable in here that others could use, please pass it on. If there is something that you would like to see in here, send me an email. I have developed a large network of great resources and I if I don’t have the answer, I will know someone who does.  Secondly, this e-letter will be my personal space to brag about the athletes I coach and give them the praise they deserve—after all—it’s the athlete that does the hard work.

D3 Athletes in the News
At National Course Championships in Arkadelphia Steve B and Bud L had very solid races! Gretchen H raced to 2nd in her AG and she set a PR in the NH 1/2 Marathon. In UT, Melissa B set a PR and qualified for the Boston Marathon! Congrats Melissa, on a fantastic achievement! Joey G raced at Short Course Nationals and finished 2nd in his AG! Great racing Joe! At the Half Ironman National Championships, Steve B raced to 6th in his AG with the 2nd fastest run in his AG. Congrats Steve! Bob S finished IMWI and looks forward to another IM in 2005!
Special Recognition goes to Bob Seemuth:
I wanted to recognize one of my athletes this month. It's not because he is the fastest, or he qualified for Kona, or that he finished another Ironman. On top of being a husband, Dad, dentist and wearing a few others hats in the local community, Bob went far beyond the call of duty during his preps for IM WI: From the Janus Sponsorship Marketing Director Casey Cortese:
"Our Top fundraiser is Bob Seemuth, who has participated several times in the Janus Charity Challenge. Bob raised $278,342.18 for his charity… I'd like to extend our deepest appreciation for your participation in this program. With compassionate leaders such as you, our communities will become stronger and healthier, and many lives will be improved through your generosity."

Planning Early Makes You An Early Bird
by USAT Coach Kevin Konczak

2005 is just around the corner. While many of us think of kicking back and putting on a little holiday fat and toss a few brews back after you last race, don't let the competition get the best of you. Your 2004 season “A” race may still be ahead of you in the fall, but starting to plot out an approach to the 2005 season may be just what is needed to take a step into the realm of the next level.
Active recovery (not couching it) is best when we take time off. A full day of doing absolutely nothing now and then
