Opening Thoughts

The purpose of this e-letter is two-fold. First I would like to share information on training/racing techniques that I have developed in my fifteen years of racing/coaching. If you think there is something valuable in here that others could use, please pass it on. If there is something that you would like to see in here, send me an email. I have developed a large network of great resources and I if I don't have the answer, I will know someone who does. Secondly, this e-letter will be my personal space to brag about the athletes I coach and give them the praise they deserve--after all--it's the athlete that does the hard work.
    Train Smart,
    Coach Mike

D3 in the News
Coach Kevin was 3rd overall at the 21 km Snow Mountain Stampede skate ski race. Coach AJ won the Lake Havasu Triathon, and Sean Truchard was 3rd in his AG at Lake Havasu. Ari Melmed, David Carney and Andy Rusk all raced Half Ironman CA and had PR’s in at least one leg of the race! Great job guys.

Big Daddy to Race IMFL
D3 Athlete Stephen Hancock is working towards IMFL – what makes his preparation a little different is that he’s starting from 315 lbs. He has entrusted his training to the best equipment, nutrition, training software, and coaching he could find…read more here: (http://imbigdaddy.blogspot.com/).

Multisport Design Works is Launched!
You've spent hundreds of hours training and thousands of dollars on new equipment to grab every ounce of speed from you swim, bike and run. And it can all fall apart in 60 seconds.
The transition, the fourth discipline of triathlon is largely ignored by most athletes. Why? You'll buy a disc wheel for $400 to save 60 seconds on a 40km course, but a poor transition will easily give all that time back.
The fastest way out of T1 is strapping into your bike shoes on the go. The pros know it. The age groupers know it. The award podium rewards it. You don't have to have be a propeller head to know that forward progress while performing an action is the fastest way to T2. However, this maneuver can become a complete disaster when the shoes are not in the optimal position, or even worse, if the shoes pop off when they get snagged on an obstacle coming out of T1. So, after all that work on the swim, wouldn't you rather be breaking the sound barrier than watching over a yard sale on your way to the road?
Multisport Design Works is proud to announce its new product: The Transition Hook.
Simple and highly effective, the Transition Hook allows the athlete to position their cycling shoes where THEY want them, in the precise location necessary to hold their shoes in the optimal position for a precise transition. You simply slide your foot into the shoe and go like hell. With a simple rotation of the cranks, the Transition Bands break away and leave your competition in a cloud of dust and confusion as you speed away.
True to the core of Multisport Design Works' philosophy, the Transition Hook System provides the highest time-saved-to-dollar value of any equipment that a triathlete can purchase. Why spend all that money on equipment, give up all those nights out on the town, settle for skim vs. whole and continually drag yourself out of bed at 5am all to have it fall apart in the transition in just 60 seconds?

Getting the Most from your Training
Sticking to the Plan – Part I
In the summer of 2002, I had an athlete contact me right before Vineman Full Distance who was looking for some help. His coach had moved and wanted to talk with me. He mentioned qualifying for Ironman Hawaii since one of his work buddies had and he thought that he had a chance. Since he was three weeks out from his first full distance triathlon, I brushed aside the Hawaii talk and told him there wasn’t anything I could do for him so close to this race, but I gave him some pacing and nutrition advice and sent him on his way. It turns out that he raced to 13:xx hours at Vineman, but he was hooked. He thought triathlon was a great sport and wanted to do another. He hired me to coach him for IM CdA for 2003 – and off we went.
He trained hard leading up to the race in 2003, but IM CdA was terribly hot that year and the drop out rate was one of the largest ever.
