Opening Thoughts

The purpose of this e-letter is two-fold. First I would like to share information on training/racing techniques that I have developed in my fifteen years of racing/coaching. If you think there is something valuable in here that others could use, please pass it on. If there is something that you would like to see in here, send me an email. I have developed a large network of great resources and I if I don't have the answer, I will know someone who does. Secondly, this e-letter will be my personal space to brag about the athletes I coach and give them the praise they deserve--after all--it's the athlete that does the hard work.

Reflections: The Aging Triathlete

I just turned 36, well into the age group I used to consider where the “older guys” of the amateur racing field begins. Gone are the days of multiple rock-the-world-day-after-day hard sessions of sometimes all three disciplines of triathlon. The body just doesn’t recover like it used to.
On my 30th birthday, almost to the day, I noticed it. All the older guys said it would happen, and it did. My training had to change as did my priorities. It is not about an overall win in a race anymore, it has changed to placing at or near the top of my age group. The younger guys are so fast these days; this aging body needs to go its own pace.
However, there is inspiration in seeing some “older” guys perform at the same level or with many pros. There are the ever-improving Joe Bonness and Don Fink of the 40+ realm, and the “man” of the 35-39 age group Chris Peeters. There is Dr. Todd DeBoom, and Mike Lierandi, and a host of others that have seemingly found the fountain of youth.
