Issue 097 - October 2010

Dear Athlete,

It's October, a month when the sport of triathlon is centered on one event, the Ironman World Championships. It's inspiring to watch, first hand and on-line. We had athletes racing, some cheering and Coach A.J. even covered the event for New Zealand Triathlon and Multisport. His access to the sport's best athletes gave him some great tips that age group athletes could use, and he passes those along to you in his article this month. Coach Mark Dillard writes about triathlon and being a kid. He shows us that being a kid can be a useful training tool when done correctly.

Keeping with the Kona theme, we interview Coach Curt as our athlete of the month. Coach Curt raced the Ironman World Championships and placed 1 st in his age group! Read how he balances his training with responsibilities and what motivates him.

Moving into colder months, we've chosen the Off-Season Winter Program as the D3 Training Plan this month. It will keep you fit over the Holiday season and then you can use a Winter Bridge plan to get race ready. Find it at online at TrainingPeaks.com.

Read through the newsletter to learn more, get some great tips and get inspired! Train Happy,

Coach Mike

D3 Athlete of the Month for October: Curt Chesney

Our athlete of the month is also one of our coaches. Coach Curt Chesney has raced bikes in Europe as a teenager, been a professional triathlete and now races as an age grouper.

At this year's Ironman World Championships he won the 40-44 age group in a time of 9:07:58. We asked him a few questions about his training, racing, balancing work and training and what it's like to be at the top of the sport.
