With winter in full swing, most athletes are being driven indoors to train. Many athletes are lucky enough to have a bike trainer and a treadmill, but still have to drive to the pool. Well, the Halo Swim trainer can change that. The Halo Swim trainer uses a bench, a template on the front and rubber tubing to simulate swimming. The Halo focuses mainly on a high elbow catch, the most important part of the stroke. A template easily slides on the front to keep athletes from dropping their elbows. This is the key component in “holding” the water. The rubber tubing comes in three different resistance levels so athletes can progress as they get stronger. It also comes with a metronome so you can keep your stroke rate constant. The Halo is best used in long straight sessions. Start at 10 minutes and then work your way up incrementally. The Halo Swim trainer allows busy athletes to get a good technique oriented workout in without having to leave the house. This is a major benefit of the Halo. With the template in place you won’t swim a single stroke with poor form and at the same time you will build your muscular endurance. The Halo is priced at $435 with shipping. Ho, Ho, Ho and Merry Christmas! Our Athlete of the Month wears a suit and rides a sleigh. Santa, when did you start racing triathlons?
About eight years ago I noticed an event called Running of the Santas... it looked like something I should show up for, so I started training. At the race, I met a couple of “posing” Santas, and they shared their stories of triathlon. I love to see the world from the sleigh this time of year, and triathlon seemed like a good way to travel during my off-season. I signed up for a race and it’ll go down in history.
Which is your favorite of the three sports?
You know, the polar plunging that we do up here would perhaps make you think it’s the swim, but honestly, I like riding. I enjoy spinning inside during the colder months, but in the summer when I can get out, I like seeing the puffins and polar bears.
How do you manage to train this time of year?
My team knows how much training means to me. Eight reindeer, an elf named Buddy and Mrs. Santa make sure that I take a little extra time at lunch to train. I’m supposed to be packing on the pounds this time of year, so I have to make sure I don’t train too much. Swim, bike and run can be difficult to pull off when things get close to “go-time”, so I rely on cross training. I will take the lead when the reindeer are in their practice sessions and I’ll pull them across the field … things like that. It makes it more interesting when I bring the entire team into my training.
Who is your favorite training partner?
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixon, Comet and Cupid, Donner and Blitzen … and of course Rudolph.
What’s your favorite Christmas treat?
Eggnog (with rum after 5) and thickly frosted sugar cookies. Merry Christmas!
