John's Coaching Philosophy

My coaching philosophy revolves around the idea that there are a lot of ways to get to the finish line. One of the most intriguing things about triathlon is that you can be great at one of the three sports, fair at all, or something in between, yet you might all get to the finish line at the same time. The key to maximizing an athlete’s performance is by listening to them and determining what their individual strengths and weaknesses are. From there we can determine a course of action to take advantage of any strengths and to help improve weaknesses.

It is also important to understand an athletes inherent dreams and desires for the sport. If someone’s goals are to participate and improve their underlying health, then their needs for a training plan will differ somewhat from someone who has Kona participation as their underlying goal. That said, a good balanced training plan focused on overall health and well being will get both ends of the spectrum closer to their individual goals.

I do not believe in junk miles or training for training’s sake. I have a busy life and assume that most people these days lead rather hectic lives. Fitting training for three sports, strength and flexibility work into an already busy schedule can be a challenge for most individuals. My job as a coach is to find a way to make it all happen. I do this by making sure that all physiological needs are met in as little time as possible. This said, if you have 20 hours of training time a week available, we will fill it with good solid work. If you only have five to ten hours a week, then we will maximize that time to the fullest. Either way, we can get you where you want to be with good planning and conscientious work on your part.

John's Bio

It feels like I have been running my entire life, I however, started playing all the team sports as a young child. I grew fast and was one of the taller kids growing up. This all changed in about 8th grade, the kids that I had towered over were now looking down at me and my football and basketball careers went out the window. Not one to sit the bench, I attended a meeting where the high school cross country coach was speaking at our middle school. I had never heard of cross country so the fact that this guy had just won the state championship meant little to me. Nonetheless, I could run track so I figured I would give it a try. Needless to say, this decision changed my athletic life.

As a young adult I grew tired of road racing and was looking for a new challenge. I had ridden quite a lot in college and heard about a duathlon or biathlon as they were called at that time. I entered, raced and was subsequently hooked. Long a fan of the Hawaiian iron man television event, I then started trying to swim a bit so that I could enter a triathlon. Still an avid runner and marathoner, I ran the local June marathon and then swam and rode for the two weeks following in preparation. Not the best plan, but it worked and I now had a third sport to train for. For many years I followed this pattern, fall and spring marathons, then swim and ride and do a few triathlons in the summer.

Now four kids later and a busy career, my desire to be competitive in the sport of triathlon growing as well, it became more important than ever to train effectively. I had met one of the D3 coaches through an on line chat group affiliated with the inaugural Ironman Florida event. Eventually, this became an official relationship and my results improved dramatically.

I had long been coaching/mentoring people in the wonderful world of marathon running and I am now doing this for the sport of triathlon. I have followed my original coach and current coach to D3 and am looking forward to helping others attain the same level of satisfaction out of their hobby that I get out of mine. I call it a hobby, but to me it is really a lifestyle, one in which I hope my kids follow as well as you!
