D3 Multisport Assistant Coach, AJ Johnson
Philosophy
My coaching philosophy can be summed up in two words: listening and balance. By combining these two elements I feel I can help each athlete achieve their full potential.
First, I listen to each athlete and ascertain their goals, what they hope to achieve and where they want the journey to take them. No matter if it’s a time goal, a placing goal, or a goal to finish. From my perspective, it’s important to listen to the athlete’s thoughts on their strengths and weakness, past training and time available to train. In order to create the optimal training plan, I need to understand where an athlete is coming from and where they want to go.
Listening to an athlete helps me create a training program that is balanced. I hope that all of my athletes can take a perceived weakness and turn it into new found strength. Getting the right balance of endurance, power, and strength is the key to making fitness gains. Balance also pertains to an athlete’s life in general. Sometimes life will get in the way of a workout, and that’s alright. Having a wife myself I understand that there are times when training has to take a back seat.
My athletes also need to learn to listen to themselves and keep the balance in their lives. The athlete will always be the best judge of how they feel and how much they can handle. This internal awareness is what will ultimately lead to gains in confidence and fitness.
Finally, I hope that each athlete enjoys the journey and finishes their season satisfied. They may not reach every goal, but I want them to be able to say they did all that they reasonably could to reach their goals. Sometimes it just isn't meant to be on race day, but that doesn't mean that the season was a failure. Each and every athlete should enjoy their personal journey and be satisfied with what they accomplish.
